Club Zouk
is the brainchild of Mr Lloyd Bertrand a.k.a. Ninjaman Lloyd, born in Basterre,
Guadeloupe. He grew up in the village of Hagley - Meeting Stone, Grand Bay, commonwealth
of Dominica and immigrated to the UK in June 1972.

Up-rooted from a French Creole and English speaking background, Lloyd
spent the majority of his summer school vacations in Paris. After years of extensive
research, planning and development of a solid Creole and African music collection, Club
Zouk was born. The club has transpired into one of London's hottest world music dance
clubs, in November of 1991 London, England.

Zouk is
a creole word originated in Martinique, where it was a common expression for party or
raving. Dance parties were referred to as zouk jams, especially where the band KASSAV were
jamming. Developed from the Cadence music of Dominica - a music popularised by Exile One,
the music is a provocative fusion of traditional roots melodies of the Creole speaking
islands of the Caribbean. Zouk incorporates a myriad of African and European cultures.
Its' world success has yielded various interpretations of the music in Europe, Africa and
latin America.


Le Club Zouk is in effect, the meeting of the
public and the music where the most marvellous rhythms and dances are appreciated fully. A
real plateau to promote cultural awareness and identity, as well as to encourage or
develop the mutual acquaintance and appreciation of languages / cultures of all members of
our community. The club is tailored to present an international outlook setting a unique
style and image. An environment for members of our community to experience opportunities
to improve their social lifestyles through language, music and dance. Thus, the
prestigious surroundings used, usually responds pleasurable to the consecration of this
formidable happening. Club Zouk is an exceptional fresh energy for happiness and a real
public demand. An ideal chance to meet like minded people, to exchange and share in the
pool of cultural wealth.

The club has clearly enhanced and educated audiences to appreciate and
enjoy the music further. The increasing popularity in culture and demand for zouk music
became more apparent by the number of live concerts, festivals, dancing displays hosted
through active integrated community works - Chakatcha Dance Group. To enhance the profile
of the club, the club takes part in the Notting Hill Carnival each year and regularly
invites bands and artists to Britain to perform. The club's main music category is aimed
at " dance hall " zouk, soukous, soca, ragga, salsa, merengue, compa,
cadence, plus the usual mixed - grill selections. Language is definitely not a barrier,
since the ambiance at the venue is designed for compulsive dancing to selections of the
past, present and futurestic hit parade sounds.
Club Zouk is the cultural shock of the sunniest rhythms, a credit to our
society for cultural diversity and reciprocity. A most exciting and unique cosmopolitan
happening for the Y2K and yonder.
